Charles Doarn participated in the 7th annual Space Exploration and Strategic Applications (SESA) Conference on September 17-18. He presented ‘NASA and Its Role in Telemedicine’ as part of the Human Health and Extreme Environments Panel. Prof. Doarn is a regular speaker at the SESA annual conferences. He led NASA’s telemedicine program for more than 30 years, developing its strategic plan in the late 1990s.
This plan helped establish a NASA commercial space center, the Medical Informatics and Technology Applications Consortium, initially at Yale University and then at Virginia Commonwealth University. He spearheaded a number of international telemedicine projects that included Ecuador, Houghton Crater (Devon Island, Canada), the International Space University (Barcelona, Spain), Mt. Everest, the NASA Extreme Environment Mission Operations program (NEEMO) (PI for NEEMO 12) (Key Largo, FL), Russia, and Ukraine.
